I am Ashley Denise Gilyard. I am currently pursuing the Master’s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Online) from Full Sail University, Winter Park, Florida.

I was born and reared in New Orleans, Louisiana, for which I attended Redus Kiddie Kampus (nursery-K), St. Alphonsus Catholic School (1-2), St. Raymond Catholic School (3-8), and Redeemer-Seton High School (9-12).

In 2002, I left New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Jackson, Mississippi to attend Jackson State University, where I pursued and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English Degree in 2008. Before my senior year at Jackson State, I moved to Ridgeland, Mississippi; which is where I currently reside.

Initially, my goal was always to teach. Although I’m not certified in my area, I have obtained classroom experience. In 2008 after graduation, I accepted a position as a Substitute Teacher, later Limited-Service Substitute Teacher for the Jackson Public Schools District. While serving as a Substitute Teacher, I quickly moved up the ranks in 2011 and became a Classified Interventionist, a position I held until 2016 when I accepted a position for the district office as an Attendance Counselor, later Pupil Accounting Specialist, and later Truancy Specialist.

In July 2019, I left the Jackson Public Schools District with job experience, yet lacking fulfillment. I knew then I wanted more. Yearning for something different, I began my quest on a second attempt to a masters degree; this time, in a different direction. My mindset shifted from wanting a Masters of Arts in Teaching to desiring a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. And so became my quest for more knowledge from Full Sail University. Consequently, in September 2019, the same week I began my new academic journey is when I accepted my new job position as a Computer Literacy Instructor for the Adult Education Program at Hinds Community College, Jackson, Mississippi.

I am always looking to learn something new. As the world is constantly changing, why not change with it?
